Great Chart with Singleton Parish is home to 6801 residents (2011 Census) and is located on the southwest of Ashford. The parish borders several other parishes: Bethersden to the west, Hothfield to the north, Kingsnorth to the south and Shadoxhurst to the south-west. On the east is South Ashford, which is currently an unparished area. The parish council works in close partnership with neighbouring parishes as well as Ashford Borough Council and Kent County Council to improve the area for its residents.
The old and attractive village of Great Chart has a long history and is referred to in many ancient documents. The village street is a conservation area and most of the properties are Listed Buildings. The Parish of Great Chart was enlarged in 1987 to include the large comprehensive development of Singleton, and the parish is now divided into five Wards – these are Great Chart with Singleton North, Singleton East, Singleton West, Washford and Chilmington.
Singleton has one of Kent’s 8 Giants, each of which was inspired by local associations or locations. Flora’s inspiration was the necklace of woodland that surrounds Singleton. She is a focal point for the community, regularly making her appearance at events in the area.
